Assignment #2

1.     How does an artist create asymmetrical balance?
When having a certain artwork that consists with asymmetrical balance, the left and right sides are not the same. The artist can use color, shape, size, and even patterns to show an asymmetrical balance.  This artwork “Noli Me Tangere” by Lavinia Fontana shows Mary, a large well-figured woman wearing a dress in warm colors. Above is a beautiful glow in the sky that helps keep the balance in this painting. The artist also keeps this painting in balance by using a big tomb. In addition, she still keeps the figure of Christ in existence with the small figure in red.

2.     Describe several ways used to unity an artwork?
Unity is very common in artwork; it is a repetition of a particular image, color, and shape. Unity shows the feelings of all the elements working as one to portray a coherent and harmonious whole. In this creative piece of artwork “Going Home” created by Jacob Lawrence uses the repetition of similar color and shape. Many different colors are repeated throughout the painting. There are several gold colors repeated. You can see an irregular use of the color red shapes in different places. Similar colors and shapes make the artwork come as one to show verity.

3.     How does scale change the meaning of an artwork?
A scale sculpture uses the illusion of space and distance. The most important part an artist does before planning to make a work of art is the scale of their work. How big will it be? As humans, we experience scale as a relation to our own size and shape. Do-Ho Suh uses the tiny, small figures lifting the heavy object to show a heroic stand to protect them from being destroyed by the weight of the object.

  1. Hi Dilon-Good- very descriptive writing-good understanding of concepts- just a note- your 3rd example is a sculpture, not a painting.
