Describe the qualities of Baroque art in an artwork of your choice?
In the Baroque period the art shows great energy, feeling,
and a dramatic use of light, scale, and composition. In this particular art
work it uses light to imply a blinding flash that symbolizes evangelist sudden
and soul-shattering conversion. The figure Paul that is wearing a Roman dress
is pushed into the ground and we can see a close view that we are right there
with him. We can see a Baroque figure far removed from Raphael’s logical,
reasonable Paul who was preached at Athens.
What is Humanism?
Humanism is the new
philosophical, literary and artistic movement. In this particular painting “Lamentation”
by artist Giotto di Bondone he portrayed the feelings and physical nature of
human beings. He used the depictions of light, space, and mass to give his art
work a new sense of realism which made them very unique. In this painting
Giotto shows a physical and spiritual reality. The individuals in this painting
in a shallow, stage like space shows an expression of their feelings of grief.
Jan Van Eyck
painting are unique for its time because he was one of the first to use oil as
a painting medium. The new oil medium made in possible to have brilliance and
transparency color that was beautiful. In his painting he would an illusion of
depth, directional light, mass, rich implied textures, and physical likenesses
of people. In his painting “The Arnolfini Portrait” there is a lot of symbols.
The chandelier in the painting symbolizes the presence of Christ. Another,
symbol is the amber beads sunlight shining through symbolizes purity. The little
puppy indicates marital fidelity. The women wearing a green dress shows a
symbol of fertility.
Hi Dilon,
ReplyDeleteGood- I can see that you watched the lecture and understand these styles, but what I would like you to do is find your own examples and translate these ideas to an artwork that you chose.
